JFS’ Settlement and Integration Services has been assisting newcomers to Vancouver for over 75 years. Our resettlement counsellor works one on one with newcomers to support their integration into Canadian and Jewish community life with the objective of ensuring well-being and a sense of belonging in their new community.
Our client base includes immigrants from Israel, the Former Soviet Union, Eastern Europe, Central and South America, North and South Africa, and others. Services are available in English, Russian and Hebrew.
Information, Counselling and Referrals
We offer a full range of information, referrals, education and counselling on topics relating to daily life needs through one to one meetings as well as group workshops.
Counsellors assess the needs and barriers of individual clients and families, identify appropriate services and resources relevant to their needs, and assist them to develop realistic goals and plans. Counsellors also provide clients with an overview of Canadian society (systems, services, life and culture, values and norms) as well as their rights and obligations.
All Settlement Services are available in English, Hebrew or Russian.
Settlement and Integration Support
Counsellors provide individual clients and their families with detailed support to help with settlement and integration into life in Canada. These may include specific family and cultural integration issues, or assistance in navigating specific processes such as housing, education, etc.
Counsellors introduce clients to community services. This includes providing a client with names and contact information of organizations that provide specialized services.
Counsellors assist individual clients and their families to articulate their needs, and to access other service providers in the broader community by:
- Guiding them through the Settlement process.
- Helping them to make appointments.
- Assisting with forms and applications
- Providing cross-cultural orientation when a client is connected to another service, so that the other service provider understands the needs/difficulties of the newcomer, and that the client has realistic expectations of the service.
Where immigration consulting services are required, JFS staff can connect you with a competent legal adviser.
This series of information sessions has been designed to provide advice, information and education in a relevant and timely manner. Each session is 2 hours long. The sessions are in the evenings and are offered at the JFS location.
The sessions address topics such as the Canadian workplace culture, finance and banking, tax systems, political systems, life insurance, civic participation, Canadian law and immigration, health and education systems, etc.
